What channel is Kentucky Derby 2021 on? Here's when it starts and how to live stream it

It just doesn't feel like the first Saturday in May without the Kentucky Derby. And that's exactly what we're getting in 2021.

After last year's delayed Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby 147 is set to take place May 1 at Louisville's iconic Churchill Downs.

Is this your first time? Here's a quick look at some key questions and answers about this year's race, and how you can keep up with the action.

What day is the Kentucky Derby?

The 2021 Kentucky Derby will take place on the first Saturday in May, as has been the case for 89 of the past 90 years (last year's Kentucky Derby, delayed until September due to COVID-19, is still too triggering to write about). This year, that date falls on May 1, 2021.

What time is the Kentucky Derby?

Churchill Downs racetrack sits empty on Saturday, May 2, 2020, in Louisville, Kentucky, on what would have been the 146th Running of The Kentucky Derby. The race has been run 145 consecutive times but had to postpone until September 5, 2020, because of the coronavirus.

Post time for the 2021 Kentucky Derby is estimated to take place at 6:57 p.m.

Who is the favorite in the 2021 Kentucky Derby?

The full field has not yet been set, but you can pencil in Essential Quality from trainer Brad Cox, a Louisville native, as the morning-line favorite. The colt is unbeaten in five races, including an impressive win in April in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Other names to know include Hot Rod Charlie from trainer Doug O'Neill and Steve Asmussen's Super Stock.

How long is the Kentucky Derby?

Kentucky Derby horses make thier way to the first turn of the race and past the famed twin spires of Churchil Downs. May 6, 2017..

All about the Kentucky Derby "the greatest two minutes in sports"

Traditionally the first jewel in the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby offers the largest purse of all three races - $2,000,000 - luring the year's best 3 year-olds to the starting gate.

Days before the race, horse racing fans check out the lineup to find out how they've run in the Stakes races of the season, along with graded earnings, and how the handicappers put it all together to come up with the odds on the leading contenders.

Heart-pounding anticipation follows. Who will scratch at the last minute? Who will have the heart to lead the field at the finish?

The field is usually set by April. That's when winning horses (and well-placed finishers) have already proven themselves in the lead up to Kentucky.

Qualifying races include the Florida Derby, Louisiana Derby, UAE Derby, Wood Memorial, Santa Anita Derby, Blue Grass, and Arkansas Derby. Each of these amass points that earns a spot in the Kentucky Derby field.
