Jimmy Beans Wool offers this delightful bag of fiber subscription goodness that they refer to as Beanie Bags.  They call them “A Taste of Fun”.  This is the Little Beanie Bag and in each month you get 4 to 6, 15-20 yard hand-wound balls of yarn, a sample size notion or accessory, a knit and a crochet pattern, and the beanie bag itself.

Jimmy Bean July (2)

This card told us a little about this month’s Beanie Bag subscription.  The front of the card included some nice pictures of the projects completed.

Subscriptions are $10 a month including shipping (to the U.S.) and $15 to Canada.  You can choose monthly (auto renewing), or a 3, 6, or 12 month gift subscription (you can send these to yourself to if you don’t want auto-renewing).  FYI – If you need a little more yarn in your life they also offer a Big Beanie Bag for $25 a month.

Jimmy Bean July (3)

The product description card is just for the fibers included.  This month is a 100% wool theme theme.  Each type of yarn is pictured and described, but note that you may not get the same color yarns as are in the pictures.  They also have a webpage devoted to the month’s Beanie Bag where you can find more product details, links to PDFs of the patterns (I like to download them to my phone so I don’t have to keep up with the paper pattern), helpful videos and links to other patterns to tempt you to creation.

Jimmy Bean July (4)

The patterns are clearly written with a nice picture of the final product.  I appreciate that they have knit and crochet patterns.  There is enough yarn in the box to complete this pattern.

I have never tried felting.  I can’t wait!

Jimmy Bean July (5)

This is the knit side of the pattern.  As knit takes less yarn than crochet, you can make two of the pattern if you choose to knit rather than crochet.

Jimmy Bean July (6)

This packet of Soak for Jimmy Beans Wool in “lacey material girl” was also in the bag.  You can find a 3 oz bottle (good for 18+ washes) on their website for $10.00.  It’s a gentle no-rinse formulation for hand washing your fiber creations.

Jimmy Bean July (7)

I don’t knit a lot (I usually crochet), but when I have knitted a project I have found it bothersome that the work can so easily slip off of the needles if you have to leave it for a while.  So, these are awesome.  I didn’t even know they existed.  (Seriously, I don’t knit much.)

Jimmy Bean July (8)

There were six different colorways in this month’s subscription box.  Each hank of Blue Sky Fibers’ Woolstok is 5-grams of 100% fine premium Peruvian Highland wool.

Jimmy Bean July (10)

This beautiful baby blue is called Thermal Spring.

Jimmy Bean July (12)

This colorway is called Gravel Road.

Jimmy Bean July (14)

This delicious bit of wool is called Dark chocolate.

Jimmy Bean July (11)

This colorway they call Drift Wood.

Jimmy Bean July (13)

This steely blue is called October Sky.

Jimmy Bean July (15)

And lastly, this is the Spring Ice colorway.

Jimmy Bean July (1)

Jimmy Bean July (9)

And, lastly this is the Beanie Bag itself.  The bags are perfect for storing one of the dozens of  WIPs (works in progress) that I have going at the same time.  I am easily distracted by the next pretty pattern that comes along.

IMG_20160722_1512203_rewind

I still have to felt it and add a button, but isn’t it pretty?  I love the colors they chose.  And yes, it’s a little different than the pattern.  I tweaked it a little and made it into a phone purse instead of a soap saver.  It is still the same stitch though.

IMG_20160722_1512260_rewind

Here’s a close up of the stitch.  The stitch is called a Catherine Wheel and makes very pretty afghans. Once you learn the stitch in a pattern like this you can easily adapt it to other projects.

Jimmy Bean Wool’s Beanie Bag subscription is a great way to try out varieties of yarn that you have never tried before and to learn to new stitches.  I really enjoyed the texture (softer than most wool I have tried) of this yarn and the colors that were included were beautiful together.  I am looking forward to the next Beanie Bag.

Halloween's right around the corner, and some lil' handmade creepy and crawlies are exactly what you need to get into the spirit! For this month's Beanie Bag, we've teamed up with designers Rachel Roden and Monika Evans to create spooky little amigurumi (the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting little stuffed figures or animals) for some quick Halloween decor, or to pass out to the boys and ghouls (hehe!) who are trick-or-treating. Whip up a pumpkin, ghost, and slime monster using a selection of our favorite sport-weight cotton yarns, and then place the provided tea lights inside each of the creatures to illuminate them on Halloween night!!

Here's what this month's bag has in store for you:

Rachel's knitted pattern incorporates a simple stockinette and ribbing design, along with embroidery to add some final touches. Her pattern includes instructions to knit a ghost, pumpkin, and slimer amigurumi.

Monika's crocheted pattern utilizes a variety of crochet techniques to shape her little creatures, and she also finishes up with some embroidery for facial details. Her pattern also includes instructions to crochet a ghost, pumpkin, and slimer amigurumi.

This summer we're shaking things up with a three-month progressive hat project from the brilliant mind of designer Alex Tinsley! Over the course of 3 months, you'll receive 9 different yarn samples to incorporate into your hat, and plenty of fun goodies to keep your crafting game strong. And for those of you who prefer a hook over needles, you're in for a treat - the talented Ann Wicker has created a crochet version of the hat that is positively drool-worthy!

Here's a look at what's in this month's adorable zippered pouches:

Part I of Alex Tinsley's mystery hat kicks off with 4 unique stitch patterns: seed stitch, stockinette, 2x2 ribbing, and reverse stockinette! Each one showcases its coordinating yarn wonderfully!

Part I of Ann Wicker's crocheted version starts from the top and works its way down with 3 segments of enjoyable stitch patterning, concluding with a fuzz-tastic section of Rowan Kidsilk Haze!

Now that we've wrapped up our spring cleaning endeavors, we're in the mood for some new decorations around the house and office! As crafters we know that handmade and DIY decorations are so much more fun and rewarding than those that are store bought, and so we've decided to kick off our summer decorating correctly (with lots of yarn)!

The fabulous Ann Wicker has designed both a knit and crochet pattern to create a little wall banner that will liven up any wall surface, while also showcasing several stunning yarns.

Here's a look at what's in this month's adorable zippered pouches:

Perhaps we've been listening to too much Tom Petty recently (is that even possible?) but this month we've got wildflowers on our minds. Free to roam with just the guidance of the wind, wildflowers are a symbol of the untamable and the ability to endure in even the roughest conditions. We felt inspired by the raw beauty and courageous spirit of the wildflower, and we think that everyone should take a moment from their day-to-day routine to go be "among the wildflowers!"

For this month's Little Beanie Bag, we teamed up with designers Monika Evans and Ann Wicker to create little knitted and crocheted wildflowers of our own! Keep a wildflower next to your bed, on your desk, on the dashboard of your car, or share it with a close friend. Let these wildflowers serve as little daily reminders to always live freely, boldly, and happily no matter where life takes you!

Here's a look at what's in this month's adorable zippered pouches:

Beanie Bag Contents

Monika whipped up a fun, easy-to-follow knit pattern for her wildflower, and the pattern incorporates various techniques making it the perfect introductory project for those who may be working their way up toward more intermediate-level skills. The DPNs included in this month's Beanie Bag can not only be used to knit this project, but they can be used as the base of the stems as well!

Ann created a quick and oh-so darling crocheted wildflower, with two different petal designs so that each flower has its own look. The pattern calls for a separate size D (3.25mm) crochet hook, but she also used the included DPNs for the base of the stems for the finished flowers.

Our favorite season has arrived: cold weather season - a.k.a., fluffy fiber season! We've already been hit with snow here in Reno, and we're breaking out the big guns: alpaca, llama, yak - if it lives in the cold, we're knitting with its fibers! You'll notice that all 4 of our yarns this month contain camelid fiber; that is, from animals in the family containing camels, alpacas, llamas, vicunas, and guanacos. Because they often live in extreme temperatures, their hollow-cored hair is remarkably insulating and strong, despite being very fine - the average alpaca fiber is three times as strong as merino wool, and llamas produce some of the smallest-diameter (and softest!) fibers in the world!

This month's bag was packed with 15-25 yard samples of some of our cold weather favorites, plus knit and crochet patterns for an adorable Neck Truffle to keep out the chill, plus pretty ribbon, a sample of Soak Wash, and a handy notions pouch!

Here's a look at what was in this month's adorable zippered pouches:

Our Monika Evans jumped right in and created the knit and crochet versions of a sweet little neckwarmer she likes to call the Scrumptious Neckie, and we think the name is so fitting: it's a little bit of luxury!

Once you've created the rectangle, you'll lace it up with the pretty ribbon included in this month's bag, and voila! Out the door you go!

Keep the lacing in and pull it over your head for quick dressing, or mix and match other ribbon colors to make it even more fun!

Our December pouches are stuffed with 15-yard samples of four special yarns will yield at least 2 ornaments, including duplicate stitch designs, and as usual, we've also packed in some extra surprises: a sample of Soak Wash, stuffing and hangers tocomplete your ornaments, and an adorable zippered pouch.

You're sure to have noticed a theme in this month's bag: all of these fabulous yarns hail from the United Kingdom!

Monika (a.k.a. merryClusters on Ravelry) is a fan of color, so she had no trouble dreaming up a design to feature all 4 colors in this month's bag!

Her gorgeous Peaky Beanie features fun stripes and contrasting quilt-stitch details to add pizzazz! Begun in the round, the decreases on the top form a square for an interesting structural detail that's sure to have everyone asking you, "Where did you get that hat?!"!

We're thrilled to bring you very special bag this month, packed with hand-painted pretties from one of our favorite dyers: Koigu!

This family-centered company, run by Maie Landra and her daughter Taiu, specializes in exquisite colorways, each skein painstakingly painted by hand. A true grass-roots business, they've kept their home-based operation just big enough to be run by Maie, Taiu, and a handful of local employees, and they pour love and care into each skein they paint - and you can see the gorgeous results for yourselves!

For this sampler, we've picked 2 colors each of Koigu American Merino, a soft, sport-weight merino wool, and either two of Koigu KPM or one of KPM and one of KPPPM, a lovely, fingering-weight merino wool.

Included in the bag as well are a Nancy's Perfect Notions Case, a compact notions holder with see-through compartments so you can find what you're looking for in a snap, plus a sample of Handmaid Lotion by Soak!

Sometimes you just need a little something to keep the chill off your neck, and this month's pattern for a Scarflette in Koigu's delicious merino wool is just the ticket!

Working up quickly on a size 6 needle, this lovely little thing was designed by Rachel of Unraveled Designs; it features a very wearable asymmetrical shape and rows of eyelets for visual interest - and, of course, Koigu's beautiful colors!

This month's featured pattern is stunning - who knew a few slipped stitches, yarnovers, and k2togs could be so eye-catching? Brioche stitch is the reason; this special technique creates a squishy, lofty fabric with stretch and springback - perfect for a cowl made to look great season after season!

Designed by Vanessa Ewing, this brioche-cable beauty uses multiple contrast colors on a solid background for a fun, gradient look.

June 2016 Contents

Modern knitters know that yarn construction matters: the way a yarn is built can complement its fibers and behavior to result in many different desired effects, such as durability, resistance to pilling and stretching, or even color sequencing.

This month's yarns are a mixed bag, literally: single-ply, chainette, plied, and flecked, self-striping tweed combine to make something truly magical!

To help you try them out, we put together a bag with 50-yard samples of Berroco Maya, Juniper Moon Farm Moonshine, Plymouth Mushishi, and HiKoo Kenzie, plus a printed pattern from Jeanne of Battle Born Knits that uses them all in a wonderfully warm cowl, a full-sized Chibi Tapestry Needle set, a Knitting Dolly for making knitted I-cord, and a sample of Heel foot cream from Soak, all packed away in a custom drawstring bag!

Our very own Jeanne Giles of Battle Born Knits hopped to her needles and whipped up a fun striped cowl to put these gorgeous yarns to the test (and show them off!). With simple lace elements mixed with forgiving rib stitch, this lovely cowl is as versatile as it is warm.

You can even knit an i-cord tie (use your new Knitting Dolly!), thread it through the lace, and scrunch it up on one side for a stylish twist, or cinch the top together to make it into a slouchy hat!
