Vrbo vacation rentals

Vrbo vacation rentals DEFAULT

While we love a good hotel, vacation rentals have a lot of appeal. For families with kids, vacation homes offer the much-needed space and privacy to spread out and get a little messy; for groups of friends, they offer social, communal spaces and can cut down on costs; and for curious travelers, they can give a more genuine, local feel in any given city or town. As far as rental booking services go, Airbnb dominates—but it’s far from your only option. Depending on your specific needs, there may be a service better suited for your upcoming trip. Below, we’ve rounded up the best vacation rental websites to consider when you book that next vacation—and a few of our favorite homes from each.

For more than 7 million options: Airbnb

Well-designed and intuitive, Airbnb is popular for a reason. For users looking to browse the greatest quantity of options in any given destination, with dozens of filters available—from pet-friendly stays to houses with pools—Airbnb can’t be beat. We find the map feature exceptionally helpful when researching. It allows you to single out the neighborhood or part of town that you're interested in staying in or freely explore if you're not tied to a destination. We also love the distinctions for quality: Superhosts, which marks hosts holding a 4.8-or-higher rating and a one-percent-or-lower cancellation rate; Airbnb Plus, which offers added peace of mind, since the properties are vetted in-person against a 100-point checklist; and Airbnb Luxe, a selection of high-end stays that have luxury amenities and a trip planner to act as a concierge ahead of your stay.

Blevio, Italy

Could the backdrop of this home’s dinner table in Italy be any dreamier? Overlooking Lake Como and lemon groves, and accessed via ancient stone steps laced with flowers, this place is like stepping back in time.

Uzès, France

This one-bedroom cottage is among the most charming ways to experience the south of France. Reviewers rave about the host Elisabeth, who sometimes treats guests to fresh bread or croissants in the mornings.

For reliability and security: Vrbo

Vrbo stands for “vacation rentals by owner,” which is a testament to its history—it began as a homeowner subscription model, for which users paid annually to list their homes online, after it was launched in the '90s. (It also predates Airbnb by more than a decade.) The service was acquired by Expedia in 2015 and now has more than 2 million vacation rentals on offer. You can find pet-friendly condos, apartments for city getaways, homes with waterfront views, and rentals with hot tubs. Vrbo’s Book With Confidence guarantee makes any trip feel a little more secure: Vrbo runs background checks on all hosts, and will put guests up in alternative accommodations if anything goes wrong upon arrival, such as being unable to get into a property or it being significantly misrepresented. Vrbo also only offers entire homes on its platform.

Banner Elk, North Carolina

Featured in our guide to Blue Ridge Mountain cabin rentals, this glass treehouse-inspired home is a marvel. Windows on all sides of the hexagonal structure let the outdoors in, while sleek and cozy Scandinavian decor adds high style to the whole property.

Dennisport, Massachusetts

A Cape Cod cottage right on the water is hard to come by. With multiple tall, wide windows looking out on the pond in the backyard, this two-bedroom home puts you directly into nature. Osprey and swans fly above and glide at eye level and the rope hammock, grill, and patio make for perfect evenings outdoors.

For chic apartment experiences: Sonder

Not quite a hotel or a home rental—but with aspects of both—Sonder offers a new way to stay in your favorite cities. The innovative platform offers private units in apartment complexes in 30 cities internationally, including New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and New Orleans. Whether you’re looking for a luxe studio near Paris's Champs-Élysées or a sleek two-bedroom flat in Notting Hill, odds are you’ll find it on Sonder. You can also book stays of an unlimited length (great for remote workers) and will have access to an app-based concierge service, contactless check-in, and spotless spaces, regardless of how long you stay.

Mexico City, Mexico

These attractive studios in the heart of the Roma neighborhood are set in a building that is nearly 150 years old. The exterior is a sight to behold, serving original looks in the Art Nouveau architectural style.

Savannah, Georgia

Located in the city’s Historic District, Sonder has multiple units in the Broughton building, sitting above local bars, coffee shops, and small shops. Studio apartments, one-bedrooms, and a two-bedroom are on offer, all with warm wood floors, textured exposed brick, and in-unit laundry.

For points hackers: Homes & Villas by Marriott International

Usually known for its hotel rooms, Marriott is also in the vacation rental game, providing stays around the world under its trustworthy brand name. Plus, it’s another opportunity to earn and redeem those prized Marriott Bonvoy Points. Homes & Villas by Marriott International further differentiates itself from other booking sites by working exclusively with professional property management companies, meaning you won’t be staying in anyone’s personal home. The highly curated selection of rentals is also vetted in-person or digitally before being listed on the site. The smaller selection of homes makes it a great option for those who are new to the online home rental scene or overwhelmed by too many choices.

Lisbon, Portugal

This modern two-bedroom apartment in Lisbon is footsteps away from the Jardim da Estrela, one of the city’s most beautiful public parks. Its terrace overlooks pink, yellow, and orange neighboring homes and has a table with room for four, perfect for dining al fresco.

For the aesthetics: Welcome Beyond

Founded by two brothers based in Berlin, one with a background in design and the other in finance, Welcome Beyond is a service that hand-picks boutique hotels and high-end rentals that are unique and memorable in their architecture and interior design. Currently, they have properties available in 38 countries around the world, including Tanzania, Indonesia, and Sweden. From private islands and a treehouse in the jungle to a hotel in an Italian village’s ancient cave, the interesting and one-of-a-kind finds here are plentiful.

Tivoli, New York

This rustic upstate short-term rental was built in the 19th century as a two-story barn with a loft. Today, it retains all its charm with added luxuries and amenities, like Wi-Fi, a hair dryer, grill, and fire pit. It’s also located on a swimmable pond, making it a perfect weekend getaway from NYC.

London, United Kingdom

The boutique hotel 40 Winks is described as a home-away-from-home experience, and is housed in one of four Queen Anne townhouses that were built for merchants and naval officers in 1717. It's an ideal stay for a couple.

My Short Term Rental Income After 1 Month On VRBO!!

Why rent a room when you can have the whole house? Vacation Rental By Owner’s slogan is certainly enough to sway an undecided traveler into booking a whole house or apartment, instead of just staying in a hotel room. While Vacation Rental By Owner, or VRBO, isn’t as well-known as the likes of Airbnb to the average traveler, it offers thousands and thousands of amazing properties in destinations all around the world. So what is VRBO? Here’s the lowdown.

What is VRBO?

VRBO is a vacation rental site that connects homeowners with travelers who are looking for a ‘home from home’ while on vacation. The company came on the scene in 1995 and has grown into a large community of global travelers. The VRBO site has properties in 190 countries across the world, with listings ranging from beach condos, through to cozy cabins, or sleek capital-city apartments — there’s something for everyone. Users can also play around with their budget and see what type of property they would like to rent.

‘Home from Home’

Vacation Rental sites such as VRBO and HomeAway offer the ultimate sense of privacy. While hotels, apart-studios, and hostels can look great in photos, they can sometimes feel a bit “clinical” and remind you that you are not in a homely setting. A vacation rental gives travelers total privacy. You can lounge around as you want, avoid dealing with hotel staff and spread out around the vacation rental.

Why Rent?

Vacation rentals listed on VRBO are great accommodation options for family and friends that are looking for space, privacy, and independence.

You can cook what you want when you want, stay-up with friends and family late in communal areas without being kicked out by hotel staff, and create unforgettable vacation moments in your own space. Vacation rentals offer much more space than a hotel room, which is ideal for groups of friends or a family. You can also benefit from things such as having a pool or outdoor area all to yourself, as well as use a barbeque and whip up a delicious feast at any time of day.

It’s also usually much cheaper to rent than it is to stay in a hotel. You can sometimes rent a whole house for half the price that it would be to stay in a hotel room — that means a lot of extra cash for fun activities on your vacation!

How to Use the VRBO Site

The VRBO site is really easy to use and has a similar format to the HomeAway site (VRBO was acquired by HomeAway in 2006). There’s a search bar where you can enter your destination and dates of travel and then you can browse thousands of listings. You can add filters to your search if you’re looking for something in particular, such as a four-bedroom house with a swimming pool, or a pet-friendly property. One of the site’s best features is its Pinterest-like “Trip Boards” where you can pin your dream vacation rentals and use it as inspiration for future trips. In fact, VRBO is rated as one of the best vacation rental sites.

Once you’ve found a vacation rental that you’d like to book, enter your details and request to book. Some properties offer instant booking, and others have a request period, where you wait for the property owner to accept or decline your booking. Be sure to check all the details thoroughly before booking and don’t forget that there’s usually a cleaning fee added.

Trip Protection

VRBO has several measures in place to protect both the homeowner and the traveler. There are some listings on the VRBO site which are categorized as ‘Premium Partners’. These are listings that have gained Premium status as they are said to consistently provide great experiences for their guests.

When paying for a rental property through VRBO, your money is protected against fraud. This is something to be aware of if you’re also thinking of booking a vacation rental through sites which aren’t as regulated, such as Craiglist, which has, unfortunately, had its fair share of vacation rental fraud scandals. VRBO will pay you your money back if something goes wrong and ends up in the hands of someone other than the owner or property manager. VRBO also do background and fraud checks. A general tip is that whenever you book a home rental, always book with a credit card if possible, as this offers an extra layer of protection.

Re-booking Specialist

If something goes wrong and your rental gets canceled by the property owner at the last minute, you can contact the VRBO customer service where there are re-booking specialists on-hand to help you find a similar property.

Easy to Use as a Homeowner?

Listing on VRBO is easy to do. You just need a selection of photos of your property — the more photos the better — and details about the property you’re renting. Try to be creative and engaging with your description of the vacation rental. You’ll also have to provide information about the rental property such as pricing, availability, and your contact details.

As a homeowner or property manager, there are fees to list on VRBO. You can either pay-per-booking for property listings, which charges a fee for each listing, or purchase a subscription to the VRBO site. If you’re only renting your property for a short period, or if it’s an event-only property, pay-per-booking is the much more economical option.

Exposure

VRBO is part of the Expedia Group and offers homeowners and property managers a high level of exposure as there are around 750 million visits to Expedia-family sites each month.

VRBO Tips

The best way to use VRBO is to be open-minded when searching for a vacation rental. Broaden the area you’re searching in — maybe you’ll find an extra-special property slightly out of town. Consider an apartment instead of a house. There are many apartments that still come with plenty of space and a lower price tag than a whole house. If possible, be flexible with dates. The property of your dreams might just be available on a different weekend.

Launched1995; 26 years ago (1995) (as VRBO)

Vrbo ( "ver-boh"[1]) is an American vacation rentalonline marketplace originally known as Vacation Rentals by Owner or VRBO.[2] It was acquired by HomeAway in 2006.[3]Expedia Group acquired HomeAway on December 15, 2015. On March 27, 2019, VRBO was re-branded Vrbo, including a new logo, capitalization, and pronunciation.[4] In July 2020, HomeAway and Vrbo websites became a single Vrbo website.[5][6]

Vrbo started with an annual homeowner subscription model[7] where an annual fee allowed homeowners to list their condo, beach house, or cabin on the website.[8] Later, as a part of Expedia Group, it also introduced a per-rental fee option with no annual fee.

History[edit]

The original VRBO.com website was created by David Clouse in 1995 in Aurora, Colorado in order to rent his Breckenridge Ski Resort condo.[9] The website later became a service for homeowners to list their properties for short term rental. Prior to the Internet, vacation rental services were offered via classified ads, management services, and compilations of rentals based on various destinations.[10] In its first 10 years, VRBO slowly grew to list over 65,000 rentals.[11]

In 2006, VRBO was acquired by HomeAway,[12] and on December 15, 2015, Expedia Group, Inc. acquired HomeAway.[13] As of April 2019[update], the site listed more than two million properties across the world that travelers could rent.[1]

COVID-19 pandemic[edit]

Vacation marketplace sites were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the four major vacation marketplaces, Airbnb and TripAdvisor forced property owners to offer full refunds to travelers that were affected by either national or local government declarations of emergency.[14] Vrbo and Booking.com referred guests to property managers or vacation rental owners to see if they either provide a full or partial refund or issue a credit toward a future stay.[15]

On March 12, 2020, Jeff Hurst, president of Vrbo, released a newsletter asking property owners "to review [their] cancellation policy and consider adopting a flexible policy for the time being". The newsletter read, "Because this is an evolving situation, travelers may reach out to cancel or delay travel plans. In the spirit of good hospitality, we strongly encourage you to offer a full refund.″ Vrbo's cancellation refund policy promoted the Twitterhashtag #boycottvrbo[16] and on March 18, Vrbo issued an updated press release for property managers and travelers which clarified "Refunds of payments made for vacation home rentals are based on the homeowner's cancellation policy. If a homeowner or property manager refunds a booking due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) concerns, Vrbo will automatically refund the traveler service fee."[17]

Furthermore, Vrbo announced that for partners (property owners) "any intimidation of travelers (such as suggesting that travel is safer for them than staying home or dismissing the severity of the crisis) will result in permanent removal from Vrbo and Expedia Group".[18]BuzzFeed reported this was still not a mandatory type of refund and reported that some people who had previously booked properties listed on Vrbo got little to no refunds.[19] Vbro representatives disputed the article referring guests to the "What can I do if my reservation is affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19)?" help article on the site.

I always use VBRO

I book all of my vacations through VBRO. I’ve never had an issue thus far.
We purchased an expensive cabin in Colorado as a group costing over 10,000 that had to be paid upfront. I used my card to reserve 11 months in advance. VBRO has a 100% cancellation refund up to 60 days of arrival or maybe it’s the owners. Either way, when COVID hit we talked to the owners concerned we would not be able to fly four months before our June/July 2020 trip. They agreed to hold to the 60 day cancellation. We ended up having to cancel and the owners were unable to refund all of my money at once. This was the first tim I had to pay all upfront per owner rules and first time I did not get a full refund. They asked to give them two weeks and we agreed on that in fear they had only refunded $2800 initially and scared we would not get out money. VBRO emailed me inquiring on whether I received my full refund after two days of the $2800 refund. I said no the owners said they would refund more or all in two more weeks. we think VBRO pushed it because we got our money within 24 hours which is NOT what the owners told us. We didn’t even complain to anyone Because of that and fear of us losing money, I will never use another app unless I have no other choice. Plus I’ve never have experienced a problem with VBRO and I have booked many many trips as we travel about ever three months or more.

Scammed by my owner and vrbo took their side

Hello,
We have been users of vrbo for over 10 years and have a five star rating. We booked a last minute trip earlier this week and we’re stunned at the level of danger and filth of the house. First, the house was said to be safe in the safest school district. When we got there, we checked the ratings and found it to be 1/10. There were bugs on the table, broken window locks on a ranch, very creepy neighbors checking out our van, garbage and raw meat in the backyard, beer bottle caps and cigar butts all over, no smoke detector in kids room, broken chairs, peeling paint in bathtub and bolts and screws all over the kids room. We felt 100% unsafe. We reached out to VRBO who took the owners’ side and asked us to send pictures. We did; they never responded and our money was never refunded for a place we could not stay in due to lack of safe conditions. We drove 9 hours to be left homeless and find a hotel last minute for our kids and two dogs. And, we had to pay for that and the rental that we never stayed in. VRBO should NOT allow a property in this shape to be on their site and misrepresented in the pictures as this was. Their lack of support or even really caring will ensure we never use them again and let everybody know so they don’t end up in the same situation.

We are very sorry to hear about this experience. We would like to make sure you get all the help you need. Please contact us at; https://help.vrbo.com/?t=traveler for further assistance.

Vrbo

I am disappointed I have to leave a review, but this company does not know what it means to be a business of the people. I rented a home on this site and upon arrival I was told by the homeowner that the home should not have been listed. Fine, I did just waste time driving here but I will gladly take my refund and move on. Oh but wait, the person who received the money needs to initiate the refund.. ok. So what happens if they don’t do that??... the answer is nothing. According to the vrbo guarantee this is not vrbos problem. I mistakenly booked a rental that wasn’t available and it’s my fault... makes sense right. Vrbo should not be in business, a simple google search will lead you to others in similar positions as myself. Vrbos response to me was to “leave a review” 😁. Awesome thanks guys! The vrbo guarantee team to the rescue! Oh by the way, the response team will only communicate to you by email, so if an issue arises and it needs to go further than their customer service line you must wait on an email from the vrbo guarantee team!! Oh boy how convenient! We can screw people over and don’t even have to speak with them! Awesome! Basically I can put my current apartment on their site and receive the funds, then tell the renters it’s not available, then I can just disappear awesomeness!!

We are very sorry to hear about this experience. We would like to make sure you get all the help you need. Please contact us at; https://help.vrbo.com/?t=traveler for further assistance.
