Learn how to quickly and easily pin a game or app on Xbox One

how to pin a game or app on xbox one pins
Serving as an all-purpose media hubs for many players, the Xbox One can be a crowded place, with dozens of games and apps we use regularly. While the ever-evolving dashboard does an admirable job giving you tools to cut through the chaos and find what you need, the Xbox One allows you to avoid all that by “pinning” your favorite games and apps to your home screen for easy access. Here’s our quick guide on how to pin a game or app on Xbox One.

How to pin a game or app

Step 1: Find the game or app you want to pin

To locate whatever game or app you want, select the “My Games & Apps” tile from the dashboard or Xbox Guide. If you want to pin a game, go to the “games” section. To select an app, go to “apps.” You can scroll between them using the dashboard bar on the left-hand side of the screen.

Step 2: Pin it!

Highlight the game or app you want and press the Menu button (below the Xbox button to the right), then select “Add to Pins.”

That’s it! The app or game is now available easily from the dashboard home page.

How to find your Pins

Your full list of pinned games and apps is stored on a secondary home screen. There are two quick ways to access it.

  1. From the dashboard, simply navigate down using the left analog stick until you reach the pins screen, and your pinned games and apps will be lined up.
  2. Press the Xbox button on your controller and select the pin icon on the Xbox guide.

How to edit and sort your Pins

To edit your pins screen, highlight a pin and press Y to move it around, or press Menu and select “move pin.” To delete a pin, highlight it and press “menu,” then select “unpin.”

You can also reorder your submenus, including the pins screen, your club home pages, and Xbox Store recommendations, by pressing the menu button on the “Pins” tile. You’ll have the option to move the screen to the top or remove it entirely. If you plan on using pins regularly, we recommend keeping the pins screen as close to the main home screen as possible.

Hi TheGreenOne503,

Thank you for contacting the forums. You can manually select games/apps through the Menu button (It is 3 lines on the right of your Xbox button) and place them into what is known as groups (or your pins). I would like you to read this article on grouping your games and apps on Xbox One. It is also possible to rearrange your Xbox home screen, you can click on the View button (it is on the left of your Xbox button) to customize your blocks. From there you can move, add or delete blocks to your liking. You may want to move your pins/groups to the top for easy access through the home screen.

Create and manage a passkey for your Xbox console

A passkey is an added layer of security that you can use as a quicker alternative to your Microsoft email and password.

When you create a personal passkey, you get the following benefits:

  • A passkey protects against a child account signing in as the parent and overriding parental controls. A personal passkey prevents a child from signing in as the parent and changing the child account’s settings.
  • A passkey helps to prevent unauthorized charges. You can require a passkey to make any purchase on the Microsoft Store.
  • A passkey allows the parent to grant content exceptions. The only way for a parent to override a content limitation is by entering his or her personal passkey.
  • Your passkey roams with you. The passkey that you set on your profile follows you to any Xbox console that you use.
  • A forgotten passkey defaults to your Microsoft account password. If you forget your passkey, the console defaults to requesting your Microsoft account password as a fail-safe.
  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account.
  3. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  4. Select Create my passkey.
  5. Enter a 6-digit passkey, and then re-enter the passkey to confirm.

Your passkey has now been set.

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account.
  3. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  4. Select Delete my passkey.

To change your passkey, you must first delete the existing one. Follow the preceding steps to remove your passkey.

Once your passkey has been removed, you can create a new one:

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account.
  3. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  4. Select Create my passkey.
  5. Enter a 6-digit passkey, and then re-enter it to confirm.

If you've forgotten your passkey and can’t access console features, you can get a new one by using your Microsoft account password.

  1. When you’re prompted to enter your passkey on the console, enter any 6-digit combination three times.
  2. Enter your Microsoft account password when prompted.
  3. Select Make a new passkey.
  4. Enter a new passkey, and then enter it again to confirm.

You now have a new passkey.

Require a passkey for purchases

To control any purchases that are made on your account, you can require a passkey before a purchase can be completed. This is especially helpful to parents who want to approve the purchases their kids want to make.

Note Be aware that if your child knows your Microsoft account password, they can reset your passkey.

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey.
  3. Select Change my sign-in & security preferences.
  4. Scroll right and select Customize.
  5. Scroll right and select Ask for my passkey to make purchases.

A passkey is now required to make purchases on your account. To turn this feature off, repeat these steps and select Passkey not required.
