The output shaft of right-angle gear motors is at a 90° angle from the motor shaft. Bodine DC right-angle gearmotors feature either worm gearing or hypoid gearing. Worm gearing is a proven and economical solution for applications that require high-speed reductions in limited space, and with very smooth and quiet operation. Worm gears have inherent self-locking ability depending on design and ratio. All Bodine worm-gear gearboxes are permanently lubricated with high- performance lubricant, and feature bronze gears for high shock load capability. The worm gear is hardened and ground for high strength and long life.

Right angle gearmotors with hypoid gear sets have several advantages when compared with standard worm-and-pinion right-angle gearmotors. While slightly more expensive, hypoid gearmotors are more efficient, produce less heat, provide higher torque, and are usually smaller than equivalent gearmotors with worm-and-pinion reducers.

Bodine PMDC right-angle gearmotors feature permanent magnet DC motors. PMDC motors are compact, easy to set up, produce high starting torque, and quick deceleration. Bodine offers three DC motor frame sizes (24A, 33A, and 42A) with both low-voltage (12/24V), “SCR rated” (90V and VDC) and standard (VDC) windings.

Bodine offers seven right-angle gearboxes: type 3F, 3RD, 5F, 5L, 5N, GB and 5H. Most of these gearheads are also available in hollow shaft configuration. All Bodine gearhead-motor combinations are designed to work together as one integral unit, eliminating the chance of leakage or misalignment. These geared motors step down the motor speed (typically or rpm) to as low as rpm, and as high as rpm. While the amount of output torque they provide is dependent on the gear ratio, the Bodine family of DC right-angle gearmotors deliver torque from to lb-in.

Form Factor

The voltage used to power a permanent magnet (PM) DC motor is not pure DC. It is derived by rectifying a supplied AC voltage. The resulting DC voltage has a ripple that is related to the frequency of the AC input.

Form factor is the ratio of Irms to Idc and indicates how close the driving voltage is to pure DC. The form factor for a DC battery is The higher the form factor is above , the more it deviates from pure DC.

Form factor should not exceed for continuous operation. Half wave rectification is not recommended as it drastically increases form factor.

Operating IronHorse PMDC motors with DC voltages with form factors higher than can result in premature brush failure and excessive motor heating.
