Conway scenic history, Southern Charm - Set on the banks of the beautiful Waccamaw River is the town of Conway. One of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Conway, has all the charm and grace of an older Southern town. Oak-lined streets run through the picturesque historic district of Conway, inviting visitors to stay and learn more. A visit to the country museum, followed by a guided tour through the downtown is a pleasant way to spend a day trip away from the beach. The charming downtown area is also steeped in historic architecture that houses unique shops, a thriving arts community and interesting restaurants. The city is home to a number of popular community events, like the annual Rivertown Music and Arts Festival along the Waccamaw, that are worth checking out when visiting. History: Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally early English colonists named the village as named "Kings Town" but soon changed it to "Kingston". The town was founded in 1732 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson's Township Scheme. It was laid out on a bluff overlooking the Waccamaw River in what is now known as Horry County. The Conway marina, seen from the Waccamaw River Bridge Many area residents fought in the American Revolution, and small engagements were fought near Kingston at Bear Bluff and at Black Lake. Francis Marion, who was known as the "Swamp Fox", had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River.[citation needed] After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain's King George II. The County's name was changed to Horry (pronounced oh-ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801, and a courthouse was established in Kingston. "Kingston" was later changed to "Conwayborough", for General Robert Conway. In 1883, the General Assembly changed the name to the current name of Conway. Geography: Conway, the county seat of Horry County, is situated in the South Carolina Coastal Plain, on the western banks of the Waccamaw River, and is approximately 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (35 km2), of which 12.7 square miles (33 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) 5.08% is water. less

Back in 1732, Kings Town became one of the first towns in the South Carolina, but it was later renamed Conway, South Carolina in honor of General Robert Conway who fought in the American Revolution. It is a short 15-mile drive from Conway to Myrtle Beach, a popular vacation spot in the southern United States. The homes in Conway are perfect for any average American family, sporting 3 bedrooms and 2 baths in a variety of styles from ranch to colonial. New construction and modern developments are also available in this booming, southern city.

In the last 20 years, Conway had more than doubled in population, which in turn has brought more employers to the area. Vulcan Materials and Avx, producing construction materials and electronic equipment, respectively, employ a large number of residents in Conway and the surrounding communities. This influx of residents has also spurned renovation projects in and around downtown, including the local River Walk. Many of the local tours center around the Waccama River, including a kayak tour. The city's commitment to creating a green and pleasurable city to live in has awarded them the designation Tree City USA from the Arbor Day Foundation. Whether you enjoy the occasional stroll through a park, or maintain a strict daily outdoor exercise routine, the beautiful trails around Conway are a great way to keep you motivated and entertained while outside.

Since it was founded before the Revolution, there is clearly a lot of history in Conway. The city hall building downtown is a great example of this as it was designed by the same architect in charge of the Washington Monument. There's also the Horry County Museum to visit, which is free of charge, and currently features a column aquarium inside a spiral staircase. The shopping around Conway also reflects its historic roots; boutiques and shops selling antiques and other collectables are available all through town. The local glass-blown studio was opened by a couple with glassblowing roots going back to the 1800s and is a great place to buy or create your own glass work of art. Finally, it's a real treat to see historic farm work in action when you visit the Living History Farm; you'll want to take the time for multiple visits because events and attractions change with the season. Conway is growing and is a great place to set fresh roots; whether you're just getting started or looking for a place to retire, this colonial town is vibrant and ready for you to call it home.
