Blow-Through Carburetor Selection

When selecting a carburetor for your ProCharged blow-through application, as with naturally aspirated engines, less is generally more. A carburetor can be sized according to your engine’s airflow and resultant power output. Even though a larger than recommended carburetor may offer some increase in peak power, it will likely cause the engine to be less responsive at low RPM and result in drivability unacceptable for cars that will be street driven.

Preparing a carburetor for use in a blow-through application typically involves few, if any modifications. Among those needing no modification are Holley’s HP series carburetors which are designed with no choke assembly and generally equipped with Nitrophyl floats from the factory.

But what if you have Holley’s most popular carb … the Double Pumper? For standard Double Pumper carburetors, the choke assembly should be removed to provide optimal airflow and performance when used with a carburetor bonnet. Additionally, the brass floats (which will collapse under boost) must be replaced with Nitrophyl floats (available from ATI, or Holley). With only the modifications listed above, Holley Double Pumpers (when properly jetted) will typically flow enough fuel to support 1 hp per rated cfm of airflow. Single carburetor applications exceeding 1 hp per rated cfm may require additional modifications such as resizing main wells and power valve restrictions, changing boosters and emulsion circuit recalibration.

MerCruiser 454/502 Magnum (Carbureted)

M1 Intercooled 12 rib

454 and 502 Magnum engines are excellent candidates for supercharging. This is due not only to a moderate compression ratio, but also very rugged components: forged pistons, a steel crank, and a four bolt main.

With an Intercooled ProCharger system, there is no need for internal engine modifications prior to supercharging, and power gains of 45-65% are typical with stock motors running pump gas. Aftermarket parts are also plentiful, and for modified applications, power gains can safely exceed 100% with operation on pump gas*. ATI has safely produced over 1,200 hp on modified Magnum and similar motors.

MerCruiser 7.4 (carbureted)

Although a poor candidate for roots supercharging due to the heat produced from roots blowers, 7.4 motors are excellent candidates for Intercooled ProCharger systems, producing large percentage gains with low boost levels. Although these are lower compression motors, intercooling is mandatory due to the use of cast pistons in stock 7.4's. The cast crank and 2 bolt main is sufficient for over 600 hp, but ATI recommends maintaining the factory redline for maximum longevity.

There is no need for internal engine modifications prior to installing an Intercooled ProCharger, and power gains of 45-55% are typical with stock 7.4's running pump gas.

MerCruiser 350 Mag and 5.7 (carbureted)

Due to higher compression, only intercooled systems are recommended for stock 350/5.7 motors. With an Intercooled Procharger system, there is no need for internal engine modifications prior to supercharging, and power gains of 45-55% are typical with stock motors running pump gas.

MerCruiser HP 500

HP motors are Mercury's most rugged motors, and are excellent candidates for supercharging. With an intercooled ProCharger system, there is no need for internal engine modifications prior to supercharging, and power gains of 45-65% are typical with stock motors running pump gas.

With lightly modified HP and similar motors, ATI has produced over 1,200 hp with an M-4 ProCharger (still covered by a 1-year warranty), with power gains exceeding 110% while operating on pump gas.

This is a complete ATI / Procharger Supercharger Serpentine HO Kit with a D-1X head unit for SBC & BBC Chevy Engines! These kits are meant to install a procharger on early model carbureted or efi Small Block or Big Block Chevy applications. This is the Chevy SB & BB Tuner Kit for aftermarket EFI/Carb which will require a custom tune done locally after you install the kit, and does not include a programmer, fuel injectors, intercooler or high performance fuel pump.

Available for small block and big block Chevy engines, the intercooled and non-intercooled ProCharger P-1X and D-1X kits are ProCharger’s entry level self-contained superchargers. Built more ruggedly than the high-end “race” models offered by others, these superchargers utilize a transmission case constructed from 6061 aluminum billet. Lubricated with ProCharger’s own proprietary synthetic oil blend, the ultra-rigid precision ground shafts and gears (mounted on super-precision, high speed bearings) transfer power from the engine to a CNC machined 7075 aluminum billet impeller, spinning it at an overdrive ratio of 4.10:1.

The standard kit is designed to be used with "V" belt alternator, water pump, and power steering front end accessories. You can add a mounting bracket for power steering as an option, or go with the Serpentine Accessory Drive option to install your remote P/S with or without A/C as well. That kit adds a 6 rib serpentine to run the accessories behind the 8 or 12 rib supercharger drive. If you have a tight engine bay and want to be able to adjust the head unit location slightly there is a repositioning bracket, but then you will need to get a custom belt since the included belt will not fit.
