Cadillac CTS Expert Review

MotorTrend Staff

In the luxury sedan market, the 2012 Cadillac CTS continues to be a top choice for American-made luxury. Although the 2012 model is the fourth year since the Cadillac CTS was last redesigned, it still looks fresh enough to be a strong choice for an entry-level sport sedan.

Although the 2012 Cadillac CTS is the smallest in the Cadillac lineup, it is larger than most of its competitors. This additional size translates into a roomier cabin, as well as additional cargo space. To put it in league with the imports, it has one of the most stylish cabins, covered with high-quality materials and equipped with plenty of luxury amenities and technology.

The CTS' optional 3.6L V-6 gets 14 extra hp and loses 20 lb. The entire non-V lineup has a new grille and Touring Package. For 3.6L models, this means the V's Recaro seats and 19-inch wheels, for 3.0L models, satin inserts in the seats and 18-inch wheels. Both get Sapele wood trim and a dark-finish grille. Bluetooth becomes standard.

The 2012 Cadillac CTS is a midsize sports sedan that seats up to five passengers, which comes in four different trim lines. Overall, the exterior remains relatively the same, keeping in the athletic look of the sports sedan. The front has been refreshed with the addition of a new version of Cadillac's signature shield-shaped grille. The new grille, coupled with the unique Cadillac vertical headlights gives the 2012 Cadillac CTS a masculine feel. The fenders are deeply sculpted and emphasize the low, wide, aggressive stance of the sports sedan. Even from the rear, it's easy to recognize the vertical taillights of the 2012 Cadillac CTS. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard on the base model, while 18 and 19-inch wheels are available.

The edgy, angular look of the exterior continues into the interior of the 2012 Cadillac CTS. Faux leather or genuine leather, depending on the trim, and soft-touch materials are accentuated by wood accents and metal trim. There is seating for up to five passengers in the spacious cabin, and most will find that there is plenty of leg and headroom. Unfortunately, the design of the center console means that it intrudes into the space for the driver's knees. The low position of the driver's seat and the pedal position, can lead to an awkward driver position. The rear pillars can make the rear seat feel smaller than it is, plus it can reduce driver visibility.

The 2012 Cadillac CTS comes equipped with many standard features, even for the base trim model. Standard features include eight-way, power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control system, Bluetooth connectivity, a rear-seat pass-through, and an eight-speaker audio system. Optional features include an upgraded ten-speaker audio system, keyless entry and ignition, a navigation system with an eight-inch pop-up display, and a panoramic sunroof.

Standard safety equipment found in all models of the 2012 Cadillac CTS includes anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, active front head restraints, one year of the OnStar system, and front-seat, side-impact and full-length side-curtain airbags. A rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and adaptive headlights are available.

The 2012 Cadillac CTS is equipped with one of two V-6 engines based on the trim. The base model and luxury model are equipped with a 3.0-liter, V-6 engine that provides 265 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. By adding the CTS Touring package, the output is increased to 270 horsepower and 223 lb-ft of torque.

The performance and premium models are equipped with a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine that produces 318 horsepower and 275 lb-ft torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard for all models of the 2012 Cadillac CTS, but all-wheel drive is available. Those rear-wheel drive models with the 3.0-liter engine are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, and is fitted as standard on models with all-wheel drive. All models with the 3.6-liter engine have the six-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Even in those models with the smaller and less powerful engine, the 2012 Cadillac CTS provides a smooth, relatively quiet, and brisk ride. The suspension is firm and leans towards performance over comfort, but one isn't lost to the other. The suspension can deal with most road surfaces and provide a smooth ride for passengers. Steering is responsive, and the 2012 Cadillac CTS hugs the road, even through some of the more intense curves. The engineering of the sedan, as well as how well weighted it is, puts it in league with its European competitors.

The base 3.0-liter engine provides enough power for maneuvering, but if price and gas mileage aren't an option, drivers will want to opt for the more powerful 3.6-liter engine. The EPA ratings of the 3.0-liter engine are 18/27 mpg city/highway for the rear-wheel drive, automatic, 16/26 mpg city/highway for the rear-wheel drive, manual, and 18/26 mpg city/highway for the all-wheel-drive model. The EPA ratings for the 3.6-liter models remain the same for rear and all-wheel drive at 18/27 mpg city/highway.
